Experience: Clara worked as a medical doctor in the Dominican Republic in a demanding setting caring for people at all levels, with a holistic focus on personal wellness, prior to coming to the United States. She has worked as a clinician at Pathways, MI for over 10 years. Clara is bilingual/bi-cultural and passionately advocates for the local Hispanic Community.

Experience: Elisa has worked at the Allegan County Juvenile Detention Center as a Child Care Worker and G.E.D teacher for the past two years. At the Detention Center she gained experience writing and implementing behavioral plans and conducting crisis intervention sessions throughout the day. Prior to this Elisa worked with the special education department at Black River Public School where she worked with children with special needs. Elisa also worked with families and helped run a food pantry in her undergraduate internship at Beacon of Hope.

Specialties: Bilingual/Biracial counseling for Holland’s Hispanic population. Other specialties include borderline personality disorder, crisis intervention, parenting, trauma, and marital issues. Elisa enjoys working with diverse populations and has a passion for working with adolescents.

Personal: Elisa is a wife and mother of two young boys. She enjoys watching movies and spending time with friends and family. She also enjoys reading, writing, and scrapbooking.

Experience: Kim has over 22 years of experience as a clinical social worker, working with children, adolescents, adults and families.  This has included outpatient counseling, private practice, and school social work.  Her treatment approach is individualized and strength-based, and may involve family members and significant others for support. 

Expertise: Kim has had extensive training and experience in treatment with children, adolescents, and families.  Among her areas of interest: Family concerns, Grief & Loss, Mood difficulties, Trauma issues, Parenting support, and School problems.

Personal: Kim is married, has two amazing teenagers, and "the best dog in the world."  She is actively involved in her kids' many Band activities in the Marching Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Orchestra.  She also enjoys traveling, reading, baking, and spending time with family and friends.

Experience: Martha has been providing outpatient counseling to adults for 10 years in Mason, Oceana and Ottawa counties. Currently she is serving as Case Manager and Assessment Specialists in the criminal justice system, and Group Therapist in the Grand Haven office. In addition, Martha has a specialty counseling pregnant women with substance abuse issues.

Expertise: Substance Abuse, Women's Issues, Criminal Justice Population, Groups, Mental Health Counseling and Anger Management.

Personal: Martha is married, with three adult children. She is active in her community, enjoys watercolor painting, quilting, and many outdoor activities. She is author of 7 knitting books.

Experience: Patty has over 20 years of experience working with addictions and mental health issues. She has worked in the Allegan community since 1987 and has been with Pathways, MI since 1999.

Expertise: Substance abuse issues, mood disorders, criminal justice population including MPRI (Michigan Prisoner Re-entry Initiative), adults, adolescents, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral treatment.

Phillip Elzinga, MA, LLP (Clinician, Ottawa County Navigator)

Experience: Phil worked for Recovery Source Ministries for three years as an outpatient therapist/counselor in Zeeland. Previously, he worked with ex-offenders as a group facilitator for Project Rehab. He completed a post-graduate internship as a therapist at Ottawa County CMH in Holland and a counseling practicum with Barry County CMH in Hastings.

Specialties: Phil’s specialty training is Marriage and Family therapy and enjoys working with adolescents, adults and families. He focuses on issues of anger management, anxiety, depression, PTSD, relationships, recovery, and re-entry. Phil is a Nationally Certified Counselor, and was recently certified as a Distance Credentialed Counselor for using technology in counseling. He has completed basic training in EMDR therapy for use with PTSD and other clients experiencing symptoms of trauma.

Personal: Phil and his wife have four adult children and 9 grandchildren. Phil is involved with his church and volunteers with Holland Rescue Mission. He enjoys sailing, bicycling, camping, riding motorcycles and spending time with family.

Experience: Ria has joined Pathways in 2011, after working as an intern therapist at Community Mental Health of Ottawa County.  At CMH, Ria gained experience in providing strength and recovery based individual and group therapy for adult clients who struggle with persistent, severe mental health issues.  Ria also has an extensive knowledge and experience in working with older adults with Dementia, with their caregivers, and with first/second generation immigrants. 

Expertise: Depression, anger, anxiety, psychotic disorders, trauma/PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder, suicide Prevention and intervention, substance abuse, older adults and caregiver issues, family/relationship/communication, and bi-cultural/acculturation issues.  Ria enjoys working with diverse populations and has a passion for working with adult survivors of childhood abuse and neglect.  Riah has obtained training and experience in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and the Trauma Recovery Program.

Personal: Ria is a wife and mother of one son.  Ria grew up in Japan and lived in the United States for the past 20 years.  Ria also has spent some periods of her life in Russia and Ecuador.  Ria enjoys teaching excercise classes, reading, playing beach vollyball, and working with children and teenagers at a local church.

Experience: Sandy has worked at Pathways, MI (formerly Child and Family Services of Western MI) for almost 30 years. She has been in a supervisory position for the past 9 years and has been Clinical Director for the past 4 years.

Personal: Sandy enjoys spending time with family, camping, reading and vacationing anywhere it is warm.

Experience: Susan joined Pathways, MI in 2008 and brings to her practice over 22 years of experience as a teacher and counselor. She especially enjoys working with children and adolescents but also works with adults. She provides solution focused therapy, helping clients to clarify thoughts and feelings, identify options, and take action toward change.

Expertise: Children and play therapy, depression, women’s health and wellness issues, stress and anxiety issues, grief, marriage/relationship/family issues, and adjustment to life transitions and changes.

Personal: Sue and her husband have two wonderful adult children. She enjoys playing flute, cats, birding, reading, ebaying, highpointing and gardening. She is also very involved in her church.

Experience: Tim has recently started conducting substance abuse assessments at the Fillmore Correctional Facility in conjunction with Pathways, MI. He worked for St Johns Home as a substance abuse counselor for a teen outpatient program from 2002 to 2008. He also worked with at risk teenage boys in a residential setting while at St John’s Home since 1999.

Expertise: Tim’s area of special interest include substance abuse issues, adolescent and adults.

Personal: Tim is married in Grand Haven with a newborn son. He enjoys traveling running, mt. bike racing and an occasional duathalon.

At Pathways, MI her focus is children and families.

Expertise: Valerie has had extensive up-to-date training in Play Therapy from Michigan Play Therapy Institute. Her last position included psychiatric team consultation and treatment for all age groups. She is comfortable doing both in-home family systems treatment and outpatient treatment.

Personal: Valerie and her husband James have one adult son. Valerie loves outdoor activities. Her goal is to age well and stay healthy and happy! She daily practices Spirit, Mind, Body consciousness.

Experience: Wayne has been providing outpatient psychotherapy to children, adolescents, adults and families in Grand Haven and the surrounding area since 1999. He worked for Pathways, MI (then CFSWM) until 2002, and then for Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services until 2010. He has returned to Pathways, MI to continue to provide compassionate, quality care for both substance abuse and mental health needs.

Expertise: Wayne’s areas of special interest include addictions, mood disorders, co-occurring disorders, oppositional-defiant disorder and marriage and family problems.

Personal: Wayne enjoys spending time with his family and photographing his teenagers at their school and sports events.  He also loves music, boating, skiing, camping, R/C planes, home improvement projects and is an avid listener of science and technology podcasts.
