Project Charlie is a community-based effort to combat the causes of youth experimentation and use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drugs.  This research-based substance abuse prevention program promotes the social and emotional growth of elementary school children by encouraging a positive self-image and discouraging chemical use and abuse.
Holland Area Project Charlie was initiated in 1986 by concerned  community leaders.  The program is based on a nationally recognized program that originated in Minnesota in 1976 and is an integral part of the participating schools’ health curriculum.
Pathways, MI, a non-profit organization,  coordinates all aspects of the program, including the recruitment, training, and management of community volunteers who facilitate nine Project Charlie lessons annually in about 90 classrooms.   Each year,  over 100 volunteers help more than 2,200 students make healthy life choices.  All third and fifth grade students in the following school districts participate:

  • Holland Public Schools
  • Saugatuck Public Schools
  • West Ottawa Public Schools
  • Corpus Christi Catholic School

Financial support for Project Charlie is provided by a variety of resources including participating school districts, Lakeshore Coordinating Council, school parent-teacher organizations, and individual and corporate sponsors.  Community contributions (tax deductible) are welcomed, encouraged, and needed!
